Berlin disappointed by Alaska meeting, advantage for Putin

AUTHOR:M.J. GDNUS

The German government is taking a cautious approach after the summit between US President Donald Trump and his Russian counterpart Vladimir Putin in Alaska, DPA reports.

Chancellor Friedrich Merz has been kept closely informed of the events in Anchorage, government sources in Berlin say, while his team is in active contact with international allies.

Trump said he would inform his European partners about the meeting as soon as possible, but did not specify when.

Trump and Putin shared very few details about the main topic of the summit, the war in Ukraine.

During their brief appearance before reporters in Anchorage, Alaska, there was no mention of a potential ceasefire in the war in Ukraine.

The former head of the Munich Security Conference, the leading annual security event, Wolfgang Ischinger reacted with disappointment to the Alaska summit.

"No real progress - clearly 1:0 for Putin - no new sanctions. For Ukrainians: nothing. For Europe: deeply disappointing," the former senior diplomat commented on Twitter.

He said Putin got his red carpet treatment with Trump, while Trump got nothing in return.

As he feared, he added, there is no ceasefire or peace, Index reports.
