German Foreign Minister Johan Wadephul today called for increased pressure on Russia, including greater support for Ukraine, in order to push Moscow toward concessions in the direction of a “just and lasting peace.”
Wadephul spoke in Tokyo as U.S. President Donald Trump prepares to host Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelensky and European leaders, including German Chancellor Friedrich Merz. The summit comes after Trump’s talks with Russian President Vladimir Putin in Alaska on Friday.
“It is probably not an exaggeration to say that the whole world is watching Washington,” he said at a press conference alongside Japanese Foreign Minister Takeshi Iwai.
“Strong security guarantees are essential,” he added, because “Ukraine must be able to defend itself effectively even after a ceasefire and peace agreement.”
Merz, French President Emmanuel Macron, British Prime Minister Keir Starmer, and other European leaders met on Sunday to strengthen Zelensky’s position ahead of the White House meeting.
They welcomed U.S. discussions on security guarantees for Ukraine but stressed that Kyiv must be included in all negotiations regarding territory and that its remaining land must be protected.
