Germany supports Poland's measures to curb migration from Belarus

"Poland is Germany's most important partner in the EU, along with our French neighbors," German Interior Minister Alexander Dobrindt said at the Polish-Belarusian border yesterday.

German Interior Minister Alexander Dobrindt praised Poland's border control measures after visiting the Polish-Belarusian border.

"You can see here how effectively the external border is protected," he said during a visit with his Polish counterpart Tomasz Siemoniak, adding that it had a "huge impact."

Polish Prime Minister Donald Tusk and others in his government have long argued that Russia and Belarus are deliberately encouraging migrants to cross the border in an attempt to destabilize Poland, an ally of Ukraine and the European Union.

The previous Polish government responded to the influx by erecting a steel barrier and declaring a state of emergency in 2021.

Tusk’s administration has recently stepped up measures to curb migration along the heavily fortified Polish-Belarusian border.

The border is secured by high steel fences and electronic surveillance systems. In May, the Polish parliament voted to extend the suspension of asylum applications by Belarusian citizens.

The measure, widely criticized by human rights organizations, allows Polish authorities to suspend asylum rights for 60 days.

Dobrindt said the problem was that Russia and Belarus were trying to use “migration as a weapon” to destabilize Poland, Germany and the European Union.

He also expressed support for Poland’s recent decision to introduce temporary border controls in response to tighter checks in Germany.

Poland introduced controls at its borders with EU members Germany and Lithuania earlier this month, a step Warsaw said was a step toward more thorough vetting of migrants amid public concerns about immigration.
