German Chancellor Friedrich Merz said today that Germany will not join an initiative by Western allies to recognize the Palestinian state at the United Nations General Assembly next month.
Merc was speaking at a joint news conference with Canadian Prime Minister Mark Carney, who last month said Canada planned to recognize the state of Palestine at the General Assembly, following similar announcements by France and Britain.
"The federal government's position is clear regarding the possible recognition of the state of Palestine," Mercz said. "Canada knows that. We will not join this initiative. We do not believe that the conditions are met."
