Three people were killed in a fire that broke out at the Marienkrankenhaus hospital in Hamburg last night, German media reported.
According to DW, the fire broke out shortly before midnight at the Marien Hospital, which is located in the Hohenfelde district of Hamburg.
More than 50 people were injured, two of whom had life-threatening injuries. A fire department spokesman told the German news agency dpa that 16 people were seriously injured, while 36 had minor injuries. There were no children among the injured.
The fire was extinguished early this morning, and the rescue operation has also been completed.
According to the spokesman, the fire broke out on the ground floor of the hospital, in a department specializing in the care of elderly patients. One hospital room was completely engulfed in flames, the fire department said.
The flames spread to the first floor, while thick smoke was detected on all four floors of the building.
Around 160 emergency services were on the scene. "Several patients were at the windows calling for help," a fire department spokesman said. The fire was contained in about 20 minutes.
Some of the injured were treated in the hospital's emergency room, while the others were transferred to other nearby health facilities. The rescue operation was completed, firefighters said this morning, Bild reported.
