Hepatitis A virus has been detected in frozen mixed berries originating from Serbia, intended for the German market, according to a notice published on the website of the European Rapid Alert System for Food and Feed (RASFF).
The alert was issued on July 10, and it states that the berry sample was taken on May 15 of this year.
The risk has been classified as “serious.”
Hepatitis A is an acute inflammation of the liver caused by the virus of the same name. It belongs to the group of intestinal infectious diseases. It is most commonly transmitted orally, through consumption of contaminated water or food. It is also known as the “dirty hands disease.”
