Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelensky will travel to Berlin today to join German Chancellor Friedrich Merz on a video call with U.S. President Donald Trump, a government source told Reuters.
News outlet Bild was the first to report on the visit, which comes as Merz organizes meetings ahead of Trump’s planned summit with Russian President Vladimir Putin on Friday in Alaska.
Merz’s talks today will also include the leaders of Finland, France, Britain, Italy, Poland, and the European Union, as well as NATO.
Ukraine hopes that the meeting will serve – at least partially – as a European counterbalance to the summit in Alaska, as Zelensky and his allies try to emphasize the dangers of betraying Kyiv’s interests in the search for a ceasefire.
