Israeli authorities announced today that the bodies of two hostages abducted in October 2023 have been found in the Gaza Strip.
Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu said that the remains of Judith Weinstein and Gad Haggai were recovered and returned to Israel during a special operation conducted by the military and the Shin Bet security agency.
“Along with all the citizens of Israel, my wife and I express our heartfelt condolences to the dear families. Our hearts ache over this terrible loss. May their memory be a blessing,” he said in a statement.
Their deaths, both in their early seventies, were officially announced in December 2023.
The couple was out for an early morning walk on October 7, 2023, near their home in Kibbutz Nir Oz, when militants led by Hamas launched an attack in southern Israel. Around 1,200 people, mostly civilians, were killed and 251 taken hostage in the assault.
Weinstein managed to call emergency services to report that both she and her husband had been shot and also sent a message to her family.
The couple is survived by two sons, two daughters, and seven grandchildren.
