Polish Prime Minister Donald Tusk announced today in a special address to the nation that the election of the opposition candidate for the new president of Poland does not change anything and the government has a crisis plan ready in case the new president Karol Nawrocki tries to paralyze its work with a veto and will urgently request that the parliament vote on confidence in the government.
- I want everyone to see, both our opponents at home and abroad, that we are ready for this situation, that we understand the seriousness of the moment, but that we do not intend to retreat even a step - said Prime Minister Donald Tusk, the agencies reported.
The prime minister of the pro-European center-left government stressed that the presidential elections on June 1st have not changed anything in this regard and will not.
- A crisis plan that takes into account the difficult cohabitation is ready. It is difficult to say in advance what the new president will be like. If he shows a willingness to cooperate, it will be a positive surprise to which we will respond openly. If not, there is nothing to wait for, we will get down to business regardless of the circumstances because that is why we were elected - said Tusk.
The prime minister announced that the first step would be to request a vote of confidence in the government by parliament as soon as possible, for which the ruling coalition has a sufficient majority, and then, regardless of the risk of a veto by the head of state, he would simply propose and adopt new laws.
- If necessary, we will govern and make decisions despite a president who is blocking good changes. We already have experience. We have too much to do, starting with international issues, building a strong army and a strong economy. We will cooperate with the new president wherever necessary and possible - said Tusk.
Ahead of the prime minister's address, the leader of the opposition conservative nationalist party Law and Justice, the spiritual father of the idea of running an unknown historian as a populist candidate in the presidential election, Jarosław Kaczyński, told Tusk that voters had given it a red card on Sunday.
- Democracy has shown its teeth. The government that is in power today has not fulfilled its promises. Its plans are an attack on our freedom and our sovereignty. That is why the government has been given a red card. Such a government should go - said Kaczyński.
The leader of the Polish populists called for the formation of a technical government whose prime minister would be found by various political options in a debate, and for experts to be appointed to the positions of ministers. In the presidential election on Sunday, Poland was divided into two opposing equal camps and with a narrow majority of only 370,000 votes out of a total of 28.9 million voters, a follower of US President Trump, a football hooligan and boxer in his youth, now a historian and director of the Institute of National Remembrance, Karol Nawrocki, was elected.
