European Commission President Ursula von der Leyen congratulated Karol Nawrocki on his victory in the Polish presidential election today, saying she was convinced that the European Union could continue its "very good cooperation" with Poland.

"We are all stronger together in our community of peace, democracy and values. So let's work to ensure security and prosperity in our common home," Von der Leyen wrote in a post on the X network.

Karol Nawrocki won the Polish presidential election after winning 50.89 percent of the vote in the second round on Sunday, the electoral commission said, based on 100 percent of ballots counted.

The election commission said that Nawrocki won 50.89 percent of the vote, or 10,606,628 votes, while his rival Rafal Tchaskowski won 49.11 percent, or 10,237,177 votes, Polish media reported.

The turnout was 71.6 percent.

Nawrocki is an independent candidate supported by the opposition Law and Justice party, while Tchaskowski is the candidate of the ruling Civic Coalition.

In the first round, 31.92 percent of voters voted for Tchaskowski, and 30.62 percent for Nawrocki. More than 29 million citizens were eligible to vote.
