Đukanović: Montenegro can return to normal life after early parliamentary elections

The President of Montenegro, Milo Đukanović, received the members of the Budnestag parliamentary group for cooperation with the countries of Southeast Europe, led by the chairman Josip Juratović, who is in Montenegro as part of a visit to the region. Đukanović introduced the German parliamentarians to the political situation in Montenegro since the change of government, stressing that the only solution to the existing dysfunctionality of institutions and the crisis the country is in is the restoration of the legitimacy of the government, which must be achieved through parliamentary elections.
The realistic hope to get out of this agony is the election of Constitutional Court judges by the end of the month and reaching an agreement on organizing early parliamentary elections, after which Montenegro can return to normal life, stability and reform efforts on the European path - said Đukanović.
He shared with the interlocutors his assessment of the worse situation in the region today compared to the period seven or eight years ago, the revival of nationalist policies and the halting of reforms, which results in slow integration into the EU. On that line, he said that the region will be stable only if it returns to reforms and has an open door for further Europeanization, which, as he claims, Germany knows and continuously supports.
As announced by his cabinet, the chairman of the parliamentary group of the Bundestag and deputies Boris Mijatović and Tomas Haker thanked the president for the reception, a well-presented image of the region, sharing some concern about the situation.
Emphasizing that the focus of the current German government is democratization and strengthening the institutions of the ZB, they emphasized that the Federal Government has already adopted concrete measures regarding the Berlin process, which should be supported, because the stable Balkans belong to the EU. The Berlin process is a very important framework for cooperation with the WB countries and a good framework for finding common solutions to obstacles, the representatives of the Bundestag assessed.
Juratović, with the satisfaction that a large number of Montenegrin citizens still support the country's European path, which is not the case everywhere in the region, emphasized that because of this, Montenegro is even more important to them as a candidate country.
Cooperation with Montenegro at various international levels was highly rated and the importance of appointing judges of the Constitutional Court was pointed out, in order to send a clear signal to Europe that Montenegro continues to function. The functioning of institutions and the rule of law are prerequisites for faster integration and our faster meetings, the parliamentarians assessed, with the message that trust is built slowly, but also that it is quickly lost due to wrong decisions.
President Đukanović agreed that stability and democracy, as a priority in the policy of the German government, are goals that can only be achieved in the integration framework, and expressed regret that our government is late in ratifying the signed agreements within the framework of the Berlin process, which is imperative, because it is a framework which has the potential for further expansion. The president concluded that, once it stabilizes, Montenegro will continue to be a reliable partner in the implementation of reforms from the European agenda.
