Danilo Đukić sent an open letter to the citizens of Montenegro and the international community, on the occasion of the shameful erection of a monument to fascist collaborator Pavle Đurišić.
We are reprinting the letter in its entirety.
Dear citizens, respected representatives of international institutions,
In the heart of Europe, in a country that aspires to membership in the European Union, something happened that the civilized world does not remember - the authorities in Montenegro allowed a monument to the fascist criminal and collaborator of the occupiers, Pavle Đurišić, to be erected.
This act is not only a blow to historical truth and the memory of the victims of World War II. It is an open political signal that the authorities are ready to sacrifice the anti-fascist foundations of Montenegro for the sake of a short-term alliance with extreme nationalism.
In 2025, while Germany and France teach young generations that fascism should never be justified, the Montenegrin government – by name and surname Milojko Spajić, Jakov Milatović and Andrija Mandić – allows the glorification of people who stood on the side of the Nazi occupation.
This is a political and moral scandal comparable only to today's Germany erecting a monument to Adolf Hitler.
Particularly worrying is the statement of the Metropolitan of the Serbian Orthodox Church Metodije, who publicly calls Pavle Đurišić and Draža Mihailović "the greatest knights" and threatens to have their monument erected in the center of Berane. This, along with the tacit tolerance of the authorities, sends a message that the revision of history is desirable, and that the victims are forgotten.
This is not just an internal issue for Montenegro. This is a test of the credibility of European values in the Balkans. If such glorification of crimes is not condemned and stopped, the message is sent that fascism can be rehabilitated when it suits political interests.
At the same time, while history is being rewritten:
• Children in Montenegro are being treated via humanitarian SMS messages.
• Young people are leaving the country en masse because they do not want to grow up in a society that celebrates criminals.
• Those in power are securing privileges for themselves and their heirs, while the people survive.
Citizens of Montenegro,
Silence in the face of such an act means complicity.
It is time to raise our voices and say: No!
No to the darkness that is trying to return. No to the abuse of religion for political purposes. No to the sale of Montenegro's anti-fascist identity for petty political points.
International community,
We expect a clear, public and unequivocal reaction from you - as you would react if an attempt were made to rehabilitate a collaborator of Hitler or Mussolini anywhere in Europe. Because if this is acceptable in Montenegro, it will be acceptable elsewhere.
Montenegro must remain a land of the free, not a space for the celebration of evil.
This is not a question of the past - this is a question of our future.
