The Montenegrin national football team achieved a victory at the start of the World Cup qualifiers. Montenegrin football players defeated Gibraltar 3:1 tonight in Nikšić, in the first round of Group L.
The team of coach Robert Prosinecki justified their role as favorites, but they achieved a victory that was more difficult to expect.
Gibraltar took the lead in the 13th minute - Montenegrin goalkeeper Igor Nikić reacted poorly after a corner kick, which was taken advantage of by Dan Bent and headed the ball into the net.
Stevan Jovetić equalized in the 23rd minute, with a precise shot from 15 meters. The captain dedicated the goal to the deceased Andrija Delibasic.
A complete turnaround was orchestrated by Marko Tući in the 70th minute, who, after a cross from Marko Janković, headed the ball into the rival's net. All dilemmas were solved by Adam Marušić, just three minutes later. After the intervention of the guest goalkeeper after Jovetić's chance, he managed the best and put the ball into the net.
The triumph of the Montenegrin football players could have been more convincing, a dozen serious chances were created, which were not realized.
Jovetić was close to scoring in the fifth minute, after a pass from Stefan Mugoša, but he did not manage it well. A few minutes later, Bernardo Lopes intervened from the goal line and prevented Jovetić from scoring. Guest goalkeeper Bradley Banda stopped Jovetić, who shot from 6-7 meters after Driton Camaj's breakthrough. Nikola Krstović's shot ended up just wide of the goal, while Camaj's shot, who was in a good position after Krstović's pass, was blocked.
In the second match of this group, at 20:45, the Czech Republic will host the Faroe Islands.
The Montenegrin national team will also face the Faroe Islands in the March cycle on Tuesday.
