Ukraine is celebrating its 34th Independence Day today, marking the anniversary of its declaration of independence from Soviet rule, with messages of support coming from world leaders, including US President Donald Trump.

While diplomatic efforts for peace seem futile, Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelensky has sent a clear message - Kiev will not lose the war, writes CNN.

The letter from the US president on the social network X was shared by Zelensky himself. Trump praised Ukraine's courage in it and stressed that the United States believes in its future as an independent state. In addition to Trump, messages were also sent by other world leaders, including Chinese President Xi Jinping, British King Charles and Pope Leo XIV. The support comes at a time when peace talks have stalled.

Trump's call for peace

Trump's message comes just days after the US leader said he would give Putin "a few weeks," further extending the deadline for possible consequences against Moscow, after he called on the Russian leader to meet with his Ukrainian counterpart to end the war.

In the letter, Trump wrote: "The people of Ukraine have an indomitable spirit, and the courage of your country inspires many. As you mark this important day, know that the United States respects your fight, values your sacrifices, and believes in your future as an independent nation."

"Now is the time to end the senseless killing. The United States supports a negotiated settlement that leads to a lasting, lasting peace that ends the bloodshed and protects the sovereignty and dignity of Ukraine," Trump added.

Zelensky: Only We Will Decide Our Future

Zelensky thanked Trump for the message and addressed his compatriots, saying the country will celebrate Independence Day even in a hundred years.

“Ukraine is stronger and has self-respect. And Ukraine does not wait for gestures of goodwill, but has its own will to achieve what we need,” he said. “This is Ukraine today. And such a Ukraine will never again in history be forced to endure the shame that the Russians call ‘compromise.’” We need a just peace. Our future will be decided by us alone. And the world knows it.”

Reflecting on recent talks with Trump and European leaders, Zelensky added: “Ukraine has not yet completely won, but it will certainly not lose. Ukraine has secured its independence. Ukraine is not a victim; it is a fighter. Ukraine does not beg; it offers. Alliance and partnership.”
