US President Donald Trump warned last night that there could be “consequences” if Russian President Vladimir Putin and Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelensky don’t hold a meeting. Who would face those consequences and what exactly they might entail is not entirely clear.
Despite much speculation about the timing and possible location of the Putin-Zelensky meeting, it doesn’t seem like we’re any closer to it happening as Russia’s attacks on Ukraine continue.
Asked why Putin doesn’t want to meet with Zelensky, Trump explained: “Because he doesn’t like him.”
Trump revealed that he has spoken to Putin since his meeting with European leaders last week.
Asked how the talks went, Trump said: “Every conversation I have with him is a good conversation. And then, unfortunately, someone drops a bomb in Kiev or somewhere else, and I get very angry about that.”
On a technical level, US Secretary of State Marco Rubio spoke with his European counterparts last night, discussing possible security guarantees for the war-torn country if the meeting takes place and the two leaders somehow manage to agree on a peace deal. Again, we don't yet know what will come out of those talks, according to the Guardian.
