At least 11 people, including a teenager, were killed and several others wounded in a shooting that took place Tuesday night in the city of Irapuato, in central Mexico, authorities said last night.
The attorney general's office in Guanajuato, which has been among the most violent regions in the country for years, confirmed that 20 more people were hospitalized with gunshot wounds.
Mexican President Claudia Sheinbaum said earlier on Wednesday that children were among the victims, but prosecutors later confirmed that only one minor, a 17-year-old, was among the dead.
"It is very tragic what happened. An investigation is underway," Sheinbaum said.
Local media reported that the shooting occurred during the evening celebration of the Catholic holiday of the Nativity of St. John the Baptist.
A video circulating on social media shows people dancing in the courtyard of an apartment complex while a band plays, before gunfire suddenly breaks out. Reuters could not immediately confirm the authenticity of the video.
Guanajuato has long been one of Mexico’s most violent areas, where rival gangs fight for control of smuggling routes and other forms of organized crime. On Tuesday alone, prosecutors said five more people were killed in other locations in the state.
