Blockades and arrests in Serbia; Dačić: Police act without use of excessive force

AUTHOR:M.J. GDNUS

It is the fifth day of blockades in Serbia.

The blockades, called for by students, have started across Serbia.

11:25 President of the Serbian Progressive Party Miloš Vučević stated that this morning, 3,681 people participated in the traffic blockades across Serbia.

"So many of them have been harassing 6.5 million residents of Serbia. Probably someone takes pleasure in harassing their neighbors and fellow citizens," Vučević said for Pink TV.

He assessed that now "no one can have any doubt that a colored revolution is underway."

10:47 The Higher Public Prosecutor’s Office called for restraint from blockades.

The Higher Public Prosecutor’s Office in Belgrade once again called on citizens to refrain from restricting the right to free movement by blocking public traffic, stating that otherwise, the police are authorized to take legally prescribed actions in order to maintain public order and peace.

The Prosecutor’s Office stated that failure to comply with the law implies misdemeanor or criminal responsibility.

Regarding the territory of Belgrade and the announced illegal actions by groups of citizens, the Higher Public Prosecutor’s Office, as well as the basic public prosecutor’s offices, have increased their shifts in order to react timely, the Prosecutor’s Office emphasized.

09:27 An action of detaining citizens is underway near the "Staklenac" shopping center in the center of Belgrade, reported N1 reporter.

At least two persons were detained because citizens had blocked the intersection near the Military House.

09:20 Dačić: We are clearing locations of vital importance for traffic.

Serbia’s Minister of Internal Affairs Ivica Dačić said this morning that the police allowed gatherings at certain locations in Belgrade which are not of vital importance for traffic functioning, meaning they do not intervene there, adding that where they do intervene – they act "without use of excessive force."

"Since early morning, the police have been on alert, in the sense that we have set priorities – so that all vital points in the city function normally. We have allowed gatherings at some places that are not of high importance for traffic functioning. What is important – all bridges in the city are functioning," Dačić said for Pink TV.

According to him, there were three attempts to block Brankova street and Branko’s bridge, but the police did not allow it.

"We also cleared some other locations, but as you know, the police act without excessive force – that is, only if someone attacks police officers, obstructs them in performing duties, and so on. And it will be like that throughout the day," Dačić said.

08:42 Students from FDU announced that their colleagues were detained in front of that faculty, on the meadow.

07:48 In Novi Sad, as citizens reported to N1, arrests have already begun.

Gathered citizens told the N1 reporter that three persons have been detained so far.

A large number of police officers are present at the Republic Square, who have begun clearing blockades from the streets across the city.

Several dozen students and citizens blocked the intersection in front of the Faculty of Law in Belgrade shortly after seven in the morning, as part of the "Total blockade of Serbia" action, reported Beta agency reporter.

Citizens and students moved off the roadway around 7:30 when police in riot gear arrived.

Participants of the blockade withdrew to nearby sidewalks and the plateau in front of the Faculty of Law.

The citizens moved away by themselves, there was no contact with the police, Beta agency reporter said.

The gathered previously made noise by blowing whistles at the intersection. Cars that found themselves at the intersection turned around and went in another direction.

The situation was tense across Serbia on Thursday.

Blockades were organized in Čačak, Kraljevo, Gornji Milanovac, Niš, Novi Sad, Valjevo, Pančevo, Subotica, Novi Pazar...
