Citizens Block Railway in Užice

AUTHOR: M.J. GDNUS

After a street march and chanting in front of the Serbian Progressive Party offices in Užice—where they spray-painted graffiti and left trash behind—residents of Užice who joined the protest this evening arrived at the city’s railway station and blocked the tracks.

This move came as a surprise to most of the protest participants, since previous blockades were mostly held on the main road; tonight, they sat down next to the rails.

“If, on Vidovdan, all trains in this country could be stopped because one man decided so, then citizens can do the same. Tonight, it was us who did it,” said those gathered.

They also surprised the police, who—based on previous nights’ experience—had positioned themselves near the locomotive depot bridge, where the main road to Belgrade had been blocked in earlier protests.

Asked how long the railway blockade would last, the protesters said it would be indefinite and that they had informed the train dispatcher and station employees.
