Brussels ready to retaliate against US tariffs, Von der Leyen stressed

The European Union will be ready to retaliate with countermeasures against US tariffs if necessary, European Commission President Ursula von der Leyen said.

In a speech to the European Parliament in Strasbourg, she stressed that the EU's goal is to find a solution through negotiations.

"However, if necessary, we will protect our interests, people and companies," she said.

According to her, the EU does not necessarily want to retaliate, but Brussels has a strong plan for it and will retaliate if necessary.

A few days ago, US President Donald Trump threatened higher tariffs on the European Union and Canada if they work together to "cause economic damage to the US".

The EU first announced the first countermeasures and then postponed them until mid-April, including, for example, a 50 percent tariff on US bourbon.

In response, Trump threatened to impose 200 percent tariffs on all wines and other alcoholic products from the EU if Brussels did so.
