Denmark and Greenland Leaders Push Back Against U.S. Move on Arctic Envoy

Denmark and Greenland’s prime ministers have sharply criticized a decision by U.S. President Donald Trump to appoint a special envoy to Greenland, saying the move disrespects established political arrangements and risks inflaming tensions over the Arctic territory’s status.

In coordinated statements, leaders in Copenhagen and Nuuk said the appointment was made without proper consultation and sent an inappropriate political signal about Greenland’s future. Greenland, while part of the Kingdom of Denmark, governs its own domestic affairs, and both governments stressed that any decisions concerning the island must be made by Greenlanders themselves.

Denmark’s prime minister emphasized the need for allies to respect sovereignty and territorial integrity, warning against actions that could be interpreted as interference in internal matters. She said Denmark values its relationship with the United States but expects cooperation to be conducted through established diplomatic channels.

Greenland’s prime minister echoed those concerns, stating that while Greenland is open to international partnerships, such engagement must be based on mutual respect and recognition of its autonomy. He rejected any implication that external actors could shape Greenland’s political direction without local consent.

The controversy reflects broader geopolitical competition in the Arctic, where melting ice has increased interest in shipping routes, natural resources and military positioning. The United States has long viewed Greenland as strategically important, but past comments and initiatives have repeatedly drawn pushback from Danish and Greenlandic leaders.

Despite the criticism, both governments signaled they remain willing to work with Washington on security, economic and environmental issues, provided that cooperation respects existing political frameworks. The dispute, however, highlights ongoing sensitivities surrounding Greenland’s status and the growing strategic importance of the Arctic region.
