Honduras Seeks Ex-Leader’s Arrest Despite Recent U.S. Pardon

Honduras has issued an arrest warrant for former President Juan Orlando Hernández, intensifying a political firestorm just weeks after he was granted a controversial pardon by former U.S. President Donald Trump.

Authorities in Tegucigalpa announced the warrant following new allegations tied to Hernández’s time in office, signaling that domestic prosecutors are prepared to pursue charges regardless of decisions made abroad. The move reflects mounting pressure within Honduras, where public frustration over corruption, crime, and political impunity has continued to grow.

Hernández, who had been the subject of years of scrutiny over alleged ties to criminal networks, returned to Honduras shortly after receiving Trump’s pardon. The legal protection, however, applies only to U.S. federal crimes and does not shield him from prosecution at home.

The Honduran government has not publicly detailed the full extent of the new accusations but has emphasized the importance of “restoring integrity to state institutions.” Analysts say the arrest warrant could deepen political divisions, with some seeing it as long-overdue accountability and others viewing it as a politically motivated move.

Supporters of Hernández argue that the timing of the warrant is suspicious and warn that the case may be influenced by shifting alliances and power struggles within the country. Meanwhile, opponents say justice has been delayed for far too long and insist that Honduras must show the world it can confront corruption at the highest levels.

The situation has placed Washington in an awkward position. Although Trump’s pardon was framed as an act of diplomatic goodwill, the new charges raise questions about how the U.S. will respond if Hernández seeks protection or disputes the Honduran warrant.

As legal proceedings begin to unfold, Hernández’s next steps remain unclear. What is certain is that his sudden return to the center of Honduran politics underscores the unresolved tensions surrounding his legacy—and the country’s determination to chart a different path forward.
