Top Ukrainian General: Ukraine Stops Russian Advance in Northern Sumy Region

AUTHOR:M.J. GDNUS

Ukrainian forces have stopped Russian advances in the border area of northern Sumy Region this week, the top Ukrainian general said today.

“The advance of Russian troops in the border area of Sumy Region has been stopped and the front line has been stabilized,” Oleksandr Syrsky said in a statement after visiting the battlefronts.

In April, Russia claimed to have pushed Ukrainian forces out of western Kursk Oblast, and President Vladimir Putin then ordered the creation of a so-called “protective zone” in neighboring Sumy Region.

Following the Russian advance in early June, Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelensky said Ukrainian troops were repelling attacks and had recaptured the village of Andriyivka.

Syrsky said additional fortifications and defense measures, including the construction of a drone-proof corridor, must be taken more quickly.

"The priority tasks are strengthening fortifications and building a system of engineering and protective barriers," he said.
