Trudeau resigns

AUTHOR:M.J. GDNUS

Canadian Prime Minister Justin Trudeau has resigned. He is stepping down as leader of the Liberal Party and prime minister. However, he will remain in office until the party elects a new party leader.

He began his press conference by saying that every morning since he woke up as prime minister, he has been inspired by the resilience and generosity of Canadians. He says that since he became prime minister in 2015, he has fought for Canada and its people, for the strengthening and growth of the middle class. He points out that he has watched the country unite to support each other during the pandemic and how he has worked to protect free trade on the continent.

Trudeau says he made the decision to resign after long conversations with his family - he emphasizes that his success was a result of their support. He told his children last night at dinner about his decision to resign.

He adds that "the country deserves the right choice" in the next election. He also said it had become clear that if he had to fight "internal battles," he could not be the best choice for Canadian voters.

He claims parliament has been "paralyzed for months" - what he calls the longest session of a minority parliament in Canadian history.
