Vladimir Putin will try to deceive Donald Trump during the meeting of the Russian and American leaders in Alaska this Friday, Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelensky said last night.
“We understand the intention of the Russians to try to deceive America - we will not allow them to do that. I highly appreciate President Trump’s determination to stop the deaths in war. Many people are losing their lives every day,” Zelensky said.
“But the only cause of these killings is Putin’s desire to fight and manipulate everyone he comes into contact with. We in Ukraine know Russia well, and that is why Ukrainians have already endured more than three years of full-scale war,” Zelensky added.
The eagerly awaited summit in Alaska comes as Trump tries to pressure Putin to end his all-out war against Ukraine. After talks between Putin and Trump envoy Steve Witkoff in Moscow last week, a territorial swap is reportedly on the table — in which Russia would keep areas it has captured but also some territory it has not yet fully occupied.
Zelensky has rejected the idea and called for strong US sanctions against Russia. Ukraine’s European allies are pressing for Kiev’s position to be respected during talks in Alaska.
Russian forces continue to attack along the front, while shelling civilian infrastructure. More than 20 people were wounded in Zaporizhia after Russian troops dropped several glide bombs on a local bus station on Saturday.
“There are no deadlines, no expectations from them, no work; they don’t want to stop the killings. The only thing they are looking for is a way to kill Ukraine,” Zelensky said.
"That's why sanctions are needed, pressure is needed. Authority is needed, the authority of the United States, first of all, the authority of Europe, the authority of all the peoples of the world who want peace and stability in international relations. If Russia does not want to stop the war, then its economy must be stopped," Zelensky added.
