Actor Gene Hackman and his wife Betsy Arakawa were found dead in their home in Santa Fe, New Mexico, police said.
"We do not believe this is a violent death, however, the exact cause of death has not been determined at this time," the Santa Fe Sheriff's Office told Sky News.
Police also found a dead dog in their home.
Hackman, 95, won an Oscar for his leading role in 1971's The French Connection and again for best supporting actor in a western, Unforgiven in 1992.
He was also known for his role as Lex Luthor in the Superman films of the late 1970s and 1980s.
His wife was a classical pianist.
