Appeal for help in the treatment of Vera Kirović

AUTHOR:M.J. GDNUS

Our editorial office has received an appeal from the NGO Association of the Diaspora of Montenegro for help in the treatment of the president of this association, Baranka Vera Kirović, who is currently undergoing treatment in Michigan, USA.

The president of the NGO Association of the Diaspora of Montenegro, Vera Kirović, is scheduled to begin her chemotherapy in Michigan next week and her most difficult fight for life. The helpline was opened by her daughter Nevena Kirović.

“Vera and I came to visit the United States in October 2024. During that time, we were incredibly happy and excited to be taking this trip together, until our trip became a nightmare.

Shortly after arriving in Michigan, my mom’s health deteriorated, and I took her to the emergency room, where the doctors said she needed to be transported to the hospital immediately.

They did a biopsy, after countless calls to the doctors and begging. We fought to get the doctors to do a biopsy because she has no insurance and is not a U.S. citizen.

It was a living hell, almost 30 days, while we waited for the biopsy results, and on November 26, 2024, she was diagnosed with an aggressive tumor, squamous cell carcinoma of the nose.

After countless sleepless nights and wondering if they would operate on her and save her life, because the cancer was progressing so quickly, her days were counted.

After much pleading and phone calls, she finally underwent surgery on January 27, 2025, which lasted 10 hours.

Vera underwent a transfacial, lateral rhinectomy with radical subtotal maxillectomy, maxillary reconstruction with a free osteocutaneous fibular flap, palate reconstruction, and skin graft at Corewell Health William Beaumont University Hospital in Royal Oak, Michigan.

She was in a coma for ten days, and God knows what my family and I went through, not knowing if we would ever see her beautiful blue eyes again.

After nearly two months in the ICU, where she developed a lung infection, she was discharged from the hospital on March 14.

A barrier to post-acute care at a rehabilitation, radiation, and chemotherapy facility is her lack of insurance.

Since she is not a US citizen and has no insurance, she must pay for emergency radiation and chemotherapy to continue her treatment, and her current health condition does not allow her to return to her homeland, Montenegro.

Please share this page, keep my mom in your thoughts and prayers, and donate if you are able.

Our goal is that with the support of family, friends, and the community, the money raised will help start radiation and chemotherapy.

We hope that Vera will soon be able to reunite with her family and friends in Montenegro.

Vera's friends are asking for help in publishing, considering that this appeal circulating on social media has escaped the attention of the media public due to the large number of daily news and news items," says Nevena, Vera Kirović's daughter.
