German parliament rejects opposition migration bill

AUTHOR:M.J. GDNUS

The German parliament rejected an opposition bill on Monday to tighten immigration policy, two days after the opposition conservatives were first accused of violating a non-cooperation agreement with the far-right.

Opposition leader Friedrich Merz, whose conservatives are leading in opinion polls ahead of snap elections on February 23, said the new law was a necessary response to a series of public murders by people of immigrant origin.

His similar, non-binding resolution was passed on Wednesday with the support of lawmakers from the Alternative for Germany (AfD), sparking a wave of public, political and even internal protests against the alleged violation of a non-cooperation agreement with the far-right.

A DeutschlandTrend poll for public television showed that 67% of voters support permanent border controls, including more than half of supporters of Chancellor Olaf Scholz’s Social Democrats.
