Scholz: Trump's statement about Zelensky is false and dangerous

AUTHOR:M.J. GDNUS

The German authorities today strongly condemned the statement of US President Donald Trump, who called his Ukrainian counterpart Volodymyr Zelensky a "dictator", assessing that such a statement is "completely absurd", "false and dangerous".

"It is simply wrong and dangerous to deny President Zelensky his democratic legitimacy", said German Chancellor Olaf Scholz.

"The fact that regular elections cannot be held in the midst of a war is in accordance with the provisions of the Ukrainian constitution and electoral laws. No one should claim otherwise", the head of the German government told the magazine "Der Spiegel".

The US president today said that Zelensky is a "dictator without elections", echoing the Kremlin's rhetoric, because Ukraine did not organize presidential elections in 2024 due to the war.

“If we don’t write quick messages on social media, but look at the real world, then we know who in Europe, unfortunately, has to live under dictatorial conditions: the people of Russia, the people of Belarus,” said German Foreign Minister Analene Berbock on public broadcaster ZDF.

On Tuesday, Trump had already attacked Zelensky, saying that he held him responsible for the Russian invasion of his country in February 2022.

“No one other than Putin started or wanted this war in the heart of Europe,” said Analene Berbock, adding that Europe “is working with all its might to continue strengthening Ukraine.”

According to her, Europe is at an existential turning point for security and peace on the old continent.

“We Europeans have our own proposals and are using our own negotiating leverage. The main word in this is – Europe is united,” added the German minister.
