Scholz: EU, US must not be divided in Ukraine peace talks

German Chancellor Olaf Scholz has called for unity between Europe and the United States on responsibility for Ukraine's security.

"There must be no division in security and responsibility between Europe and the United States," Scholz told reporters after a European summit in Paris.

He made the remarks after the United States tried to start talks with Russia without consulting the European Union, Reuters reported.

"NATO is based on always acting together and sharing risks, thereby ensuring our security. That must not be called into question," Scholz stressed.

The leaders of several European countries gathered at the Elysee Palace in Paris for an emergency summit called by French President Emmanuel Macron to agree on a common position on Ukraine before the administration of US President Donald Trump takes further steps.

The meeting comes as the Trump administration has sharply criticized the European Union and plans to negotiate directly with Russia to end the war in Ukraine.

The meeting was also attended by the leaders of Italy, Poland, Spain, the Netherlands and Denmark, as well as the president of the European Commission and NATO Secretary General Mark Rutte.

"The aim is to determine what Europeans can do for themselves, given the acceleration of events in Ukraine following President Trump's initiatives," Macron's adviser said.

He stressed that Europe must take greater responsibility for its own security.

Trump recently spoke by phone with Russian President Vladimir Putin, during which the possibility of negotiations on Ukraine was mentioned, which caused concern among European leaders.

At the same time, at the Munich Security Conference, US Vice President J.D. Vance criticized the EU, accusing it of not respecting freedom of speech.

He confirmed that the US is considering negotiations on Ukraine without the participation of the Europeans.

Ukrainian President Zelensky urged allies to stand firm and prevent a deal being made behind Ukraine and Europe's backs.

French Foreign Minister Jean-Noel Barrot said Europe would be part of the Ukraine talks, one way or another.

He also described the idea of Russia returning to the G7 as unthinkable, responding to Donald Trump's statement to that effect.
