Mother, daughter die in Munich attack by Afghan man

AUTHOR:M.J. GDNUS

A 37-year-old woman and her two-year-old daughter died on Saturday from injuries sustained when an Afghan national drove his car into a crowd in Munich on Thursday, German police said. They are the first victims of the attack, according to Reuters.

Prosecutors said on Friday that at least 39 people were injured, some critically, when a car ploughed into union activists demonstrating for higher wages.

Authorities said they were treating the incident as a religiously motivated attack.

The attack has put security issues back in the spotlight ahead of Germany's federal elections on February 23.

The attack also came just hours before international leaders were due to arrive in the southern German city for the annual Munich Security Conference.

Outgoing German Chancellor Olaf Scholz, Munich Mayor Dieter Reiter, and German Minister of Justice and Minister for Digital Affairs and Transport Volker Wiesing laid flowers at the scene of the tragedy after the news was announced.
