Saudi Arabia has hosted a lavish reception for US President Donald Trump in Riyadh, where he landed earlier today.
In 2021, Saudi Arabia replaced the traditional red carpet with a lavender one, stating that the color was inspired by "Saudi Arabia's natural heritage," namely the seasonal lavender blooms in the country's desert regions.
Saudi Arabia has clearly made sure that the US president does not lack anything during his visit to the Middle East, including his favorite fast food.
According to American media, the Saudis have provided a mobile McDonald's restaurant in case Trump does not make it to one of the many existing branches in the country.
Trump is known for his penchant for fast food, and during the campaign he even served guests at a McDonald's in Pennsylvania.
A drastic difference from Biden's times
But the difference in protocol was also visible on another level, the political one.
Unlike former US President Joe Biden's visit in 2022, when Saudi Crown Prince Mohammed bin Salman sent an envoy to meet him at the airport, Trump was personally greeted by bin Salman on the steps of the presidential plane today.
Recall that before arriving in Saudi Arabia, Biden stated that he would "isolate the kingdom" due to the murder of journalist Jamal Khashoggi and human rights violations. Trump, on the other hand, has maintained close political and business ties with the royal family since his first term.
