Croatians wrote to VPSCG: They do not want to play in Kotor

The Croatian Water Polo Association has addressed the Water Polo Association of Montenegro – and pointed out that the local team does not want to play the World Cup Superfinal matches in the Kotor pool.

Montenegro is the host of the World Cup Superfinal from April 11 to 13, and the “sharks” are playing Croatia in the quarterfinals.

And it seems that this will not be possible in Kotor, and in addition to the ancient city, Budva is also the host.

“We hereby inform you that the Croatian Water Polo Association will adhere to the recommendations of the Government of the Republic of Croatia, which unequivocally state that clubs and national teams do not play in the Kotor pool. Therefore, we hereby ask you to resolve the controversial issue of the name of the pool in Kotor at the level of the two states,” reads the letter from the Croatian Water Polo Association sent to the Croatian Water Polo Association.

Croatian authorities are not allowing water polo players to play in the Kotor pool because it is named after Zoran-Džimij Gopčević, who is accused of war crimes in the Morinj camp.

“In the event that you still decide to organize the World Cup final in Kotor, our team will cancel the performance at the cost of sanctions from World Aquatics. We believe that this would not suit anyone, and that it would jeopardize the cooperation of the two Federations, and therefore the holding of the regional league,” the statement added.

In addition to Montenegro and Croatia, Spain, Hungary, Greece, Japan, the Netherlands and Germany are also participating in the Superfinal.
