US President Joseph Biden today presented the Presidential Medal of Freedom, an award given to the most prominent people in the fields of politics, sports, entertainment, human rights and science.
19 people received the medal. Former Secretary of State Hillary Clinton is one of the recipients, and the crowd greeted her with applause at the award ceremony.
Philanthropist George Soros and actor Denzel Washington were also honored.
"For the last time as president, I have the honor of presenting the Medal of Freedom, our nation's highest civilian honor, to a group of extraordinary, truly extraordinary people," Biden said.
Four medals were awarded posthumously, and were awarded to George W. Romney, who was Governor of Michigan and Secretary of Housing and Urban Development, former Attorney General and Senator Robert F. Kennedy, then Ash Carter, former Secretary of Defense, and Fannie Lou Hamer, who founded the Mississippi Freedom Democratic Party and laid the foundation for the Voting Rights Act of 1965.
