AUTHOR:M.J. GDNUS

Victims have been reported at the US Army base at Fort Stewart in Georgia, after a Fort Stewart police spokesman confirmed the presence of an "active shooter".

Details on the nature of the casualties are still unknown.

Lt. Col. Angel Tomko, a spokesman for the Fort Stewart Police Department, declined to provide further information, but the verified Facebook page for Fort Stewart-Hunter Air Force Base stated: "Victims have been reported and the situation is ongoing."

The US Army at Fort Stewart trains and deploys active and reserve military units and is home to the 3rd Infantry Division. It is located about 40 miles southwest of Savannah, Georgia.

According to its website, the location is home to more than 10,000 people - soldiers, family members and civilian employees of the military.

Georgia Governor Brian Kemp said he was in “close contact” with police, saying he was “saddened by today’s tragedy at Fort Stewart.”

“The victims, their families and all those who responded to the call to serve are in our hearts and prayers. We urge all Georgians around the world to do the same,” he added.

Videos from the military base during the incident are circulating on social media, but their authenticity has not yet been confirmed.
