Trump proposes meeting with Putin and Zelensky in Rome: How do Kiev and Moscow view the idea?

AUTHOR:M.J. GDNUS

US President Donald Trump asked Italian Prime Minister Giorgia Meloni during a phone call whether Italy would be willing to host a trilateral meeting on the war in Ukraine in Rome involving Russian President Vladimir Putin and Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelensky, sources said.

Meloni replied that Italy would agree, after which US Secretary of State Marco Rubio discussed the idea with officials from France, Germany, Britain, Ukraine and Finland. According to the source, Zelensky supported the proposal, ANSA reports.

The same sources state, however, that Moscow will not agree to hold the meeting in Rome because it believes Italy is too favorable to Kiev.

A Russian source told Tass that the meeting will not be held in the EU, and that the United Arab Emirates or Turkey are being considered as the most likely locations.

Putin has not yet committed to meeting with Zelensky, but the Kremlin said he and Trump had agreed to meet in the coming days.
