US President Donald Trump announced on his social network Truth that his "long-awaited meeting" with Russian President Vladimir Putin will take place on August 15 in the northwestern US state of Alaska.
Trump, who has repeatedly promised to end the war in Ukraine, has spoken to Putin several times by phone in recent months, but has not met with him in person since returning to the White House. The main topic of the upcoming meeting, as expected, will be precisely the end of the war in Ukraine.
- Now President Zelensky must get everything he needs, because he will have to be ready to sign something - Trump said.
He emphasized that the agreement would include a territorial exchange, which, according to him, would be beneficial for both sides.
- We are talking about territory that has been fought over for three and a half years. A lot of Russians have died. A lot of Ukrainians have died. So we are looking at that situation. We want to return something, exchange something. It is very complicated... But we will return something, exchange something. There will be an exchange of territory, for the benefit of both sides - explained Trump.
The US president also claimed that his intervention prevented a wider escalation of the conflict.
- If we, the United States of America, had not reacted, Ukraine and Russia would have ended up in a world war, and I stopped it - he said.
- Now the only question is when it will be resolved - and it could be very soon - added Trump. He also raised the possibility of a trilateral meeting with Putin and Zelensky, emphasizing that he believes that Putin wants peace, as does Ukraine, and other European leaders.
