Elon Musk, billionaire and founder of Tesla and SpaceX, announced that he is launching a new political party called "America Party", a few weeks after he publicly broke off his alliance with former US President Donald Trump.
Musk announced the news via his social network X, presenting the new party as a response to, as he says, "fake democracy" and the dominance of the two major parties - Republican and Democratic.
"When it comes to bankrupting our country through waste and corruption, we live in a one-party system, not a democracy," Musk wrote.
"Today, America Party is being formed to give you back your freedom."
Although the announcement caused a great resonance, the Federal Election Commission (FEC) did not publish documents confirming that the party was formally registered until Saturday. Also, although Musk himself cannot run for president because he was not born in the US, he did not specify who would lead the new political organization.
Musk was until recently a close ally of Donald Trump - he participated in pre-election rallies. He also donated $ 250 million to Trump's campaign and after the election was appointed to head a new government body - the "Department of Government Efficiency" (DOGE).
However, the relationship between the two billionaires deteriorated when Musk left the administration in May, publicly criticized Trump's economic package and turned against him.
The controversial law includes huge tax breaks and consumer incentives, but according to estimates, it will additionally burden the US deficit by more than $ 3 trillion over the next decade.
Musk and Trump have similar views on contemporary social issues. However, Musk argues that the Republican program will increase the debt, calling it “debt slavery.”
The two-party system in the US has long been criticized by both registered Democrats and Republicans, but attempts to form a third party over the past century have had little success.
For Musk, who runs companies focused on the green transition, the fact that the bill does not include subsidies for electric vehicles, including Tesla, is even more problematic.
Trump’s response: “Without subsidies, he would have closed factories”
Trump did not stay in his place:
“Elon may have received more subsidies than anyone in history. Without them, he would have had to close his companies and go home to South Africa,” he posted on his Truth Social network.
He also threatened that DOGE would investigate government subsidies that benefit Musk’s companies, including SpaceX and Starlink, which have contracts with the US and European militaries.
While the US has occasionally had prominent independent or “third” political actors, no party outside the traditional two-party system has been able to achieve serious national influence.
In last year's presidential election, candidates from the Libertarian, Green, and People's Parties failed to win a majority of the vote, while Trump's victory over Democratic candidate Kamala Harris remained within the expected range.
Although the America Party does not yet have a platform, leader, or infrastructure, Musk's enormous influence and wealth put him in a position to potentially shake up the established political order—at least as a factor in putting pressure on the current powerful.
