Iran and Gaza hostages in focus of Netanyahu-Trump meeting

AUTHOR:M.J. GDNUS

Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu said this morning that his meeting with US President Donald Trump was focused on efforts to free hostages held in Gaza, as well as Israel's determination to "eliminate" Hamas' military and political capabilities.

Netanyahu added that during the meeting they also discussed the consequences and possibilities of what he called a "great victory over Iran", during his third visit to the United States since Trump began his second term on January 20.

Trump and Netanyahu met yesterday for the second time in two days to discuss the situation in Gaza, while US Middle East envoy Steve Witkoff indicated that Israel and Hamas are close to a ceasefire agreement after almost two years of war.

A delegation from Qatar, the host country for indirect talks between Israeli negotiators and Hamas, met with senior White House officials before Netanyahu's arrival, Axios reported, citing a source familiar with the details.

The White House did not immediately comment on the allegations.
