European Commission President Ursula von der Leyen had a “good conversation” with United States President Donald Trump yesterday by phone, the Commission’s spokesperson announced today. He added that the European Union’s goal remains to reach a trade agreement with Washington by July 9.
“We want to reach an agreement with the United States. We want to avoid tariffs because we believe they cause harm. Our goal is solutions that benefit everyone, not situations where everyone loses,” the spokesperson said to journalists at a regular press conference.
President Trump’s administration had earlier announced that official notifications of higher tariffs would be sent to partners with whom no agreement is reached by July 9, with the tariffs set to take effect on August 1.
