Democratic former US Vice President Kamala Harris announced today that she will not run for governor of California, ending speculation that the failed presidential candidate might seek the high-profile office.
"I have seriously considered asking the people of California for the privilege of serving them as governor. I love this state, its people and its promise. This is my home. But after deep consideration, I have decided not to run in this election," she said in a statement.
Harris said she would not run for office now, leaving the door open for a possible presidential bid in 2028.
"For now, my leadership, like my public service, will not be in elected office. I look forward to getting back to the people, listening to Americans, helping elect Democrats across the country who will fight without fear, and sharing more details about my own plans in the coming months," she said.
Harris has been relatively quiet since losing the 2024 presidential election to Republican Donald Trump.
California Governor Gavin Newsom, also a Democrat, who has held the office since 2019, is ineligible to run again due to term limits.
Other prominent Democratic candidates have already announced their candidacies, including Xavier Becerra, who served as health and human resources director in former President Joe Biden's administration, and former Representative Katie Porter.
