A state of emergency has been declared in New York City as wildfires continue to spread across Long Island, forcing mass evacuations.
Governor Kathy Hochul confirmed that firefighters, supported by National Guard helicopters, are battling a blaze near the Pine Barrens, a wooded area east of New York City that includes several suburban neighborhoods.
Strong winds have made the situation worse, prompting the evacuation of a military base and the closure of a major highway.
NASA satellite data has revealed flames and smoke stretching about two and a half miles along Sunrise Highway, a key route to the eastern tip of Long Island. Hochul said nearby homes, a chemical plant and an Amazon warehouse are at risk.
As the fires rage, videos on social media show large plumes of smoke billowing in Brooklyn.
