The United States Secret Service shot an armed man from Indiana, who was one block from the White House, early this morning, after local law enforcement authorities notified the agency of a "suicidal individual," the agency said.

"Secret Service agents were involved in a shooting following an armed encounter with a person of interest just after midnight on March 9 at 17th and G Streets NW," Secret Service spokesman Anthony Giulielmi confirmed on Platform X, the New York Post reported.

Federal agents observed a man's car parked near the intersection of 17th and F Streets, near the Eisenhower Executive Office Building, one block west of the West Wing of the White House.

The unidentified man walked toward the famous Pennsylvania Avenue, where Secret Service agents found him just after midnight.

An "armed confrontation" ensued when the man pulled out a firearm.

Secret Service agents were forced to open fire on the man, who was then taken to a local hospital in unknown condition, the agency said.

No Secret Service members were injured, the agency said in a statement.

US President Donald Trump was at the time of the shooting was staying at his Mar-a-Lago estate in Florida.

The man, who was said to be suicidal, is believed to have traveled from Indiana to Washington on Saturday, prompting local police to notify the Secret Service.
