Trump: We're doubling tariffs on Canada, going to 50 percent

US President Donald Trump announced that he would double planned tariffs on Canadian steel and aluminum from 25% to 50%, escalating the trade war with the US's northern neighbor.

Trump said the tariff increase, which will take effect on Wednesday, is a response to the increase in tariffs imposed by the Ontario provincial government on electricity sold to the US.

US stock markets immediately fell after Trump's announcement.
