The administration of Republican US President Donald Trump announced today that it will pay illegal immigrants who voluntarily return to their countries $1,000. The Department of Homeland Security said in a statement that it will also pay the immigrants' travel expenses.
It also announced that migrants who use an app called CBP Home to notify the US government that they plan to return to their country will be "deprioritized" for detention and forced deportation.
"If you are here illegally, self-deportation is the best, safest, and most cost-effective way for you to leave the United States and avoid arrest. The Department of Homeland Security is offering illegal immigrants assistance with travel expenses as well as financial incentives to return to their country of origin through the CBP Home app," Secretary Kristi Noem wrote.
The mass deportation of illegal immigrants has been a central theme of Donald Trump's presidential campaign, but it is a costly and resource-intensive undertaking, the AP reports.
On the one hand, the Republican administration is pressuring Congress to drastically increase the resources of the federal agency responsible for deporting immigrants, and on the other hand, it is encouraging "illegal immigrants" to "self-deport."
