Donald Trump said in an interview with the American television network NBC broadcast today that he is not sure if he should adhere to the US Constitution, regarding a potential third term in the White House.
"I don't know," the American president replied when asked if he believes he must respect the US Constitution (which allows a maximum of two terms).
"I have brilliant lawyers working for me and they will obviously follow what the Supreme Court says," Trump said.
When asked whether foreigners on American soil should be given a fair trial, as provided for by the Constitution, the Republican billionaire said that he is not a lawyer and that he does not know.
Trump has put the fight against illegal immigration first, speaking of an "invasion of criminals from abroad" and organizing police operations to prevent it.
However, judges have blocked several of his decisions.
Federal and appellate courts, as well as the Supreme Court, have already temporarily blocked the 1798 “enemy aliens” law, which was previously used only in times of war. The courts have said that immigrants should be able to exercise and defend their rights.
Trump, who has repeatedly mentioned the possibility of a third term since returning to the White House in January, appears to have dismissed the possibility, which is prohibited by the Constitution.
“That’s not what I’m trying to do,” Trump said of a third term.
“I want to have four very good years and then step down and make way for someone else, ideally a great Republican,” added Trump, who has named his Vice President J.D. Vance and Secretary of State Marco Rubio as potential successors.
