Trump says Crimea will remain Russian, Zelensky says it is Ukrainian

AUTHOR:M.J. GDNUS

Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelensky has clearly rejected US President Donald Trump's claim that "Crimea will remain with Russia", saying that the peninsula belongs to Ukraine.

"Our position is unchanged: only the Ukrainian people have the right to decide which territory belongs to Ukraine", Zelensky told reporters in Kiev, adding: "The Constitution of Ukraine says that all temporarily occupied territories... belong to Ukraine, to the Ukrainian people."

"What President Trump is saying is true. I agree with him that today we do not have enough weapons to regain control of the Crimean peninsula," Zelensky added.

Trump claims that Crimea will remain Russian

Zelensky's statement came after Trump said in an interview with Time magazine: "Crimea will remain with Russia."

Trump added that "Zelensky understands that" and that "everyone understands that [Crimea] has been with them for a long time", referring to Russia. Crimea is a strategically important peninsula in southern Ukraine that Russia illegally annexed in 2014. Zelensky has repeatedly rejected the idea of recognizing the region as Russian.
