Trump says he doubts Putin wants to end war

AUTHOR:M.J. GDNUS

United States President Donald Trump said on Saturday that he doubts Russian President Vladimir Putin wants to end the war in Ukraine.

In a post on social media, Trump expressed doubts that a peace agreement can be reached soon, although the day before he said that Ukraine and Russia are "very close to an agreement".

Noting that he returned to the US after the funeral of Pope Francis, he said that "there was no reason for Putin to fire missiles at civilian areas, cities and towns in the last few days".

He also hinted at the possibility of new sanctions on Russia.

"It makes me think that maybe he doesn't want to stop the war, he just approves of what I say and needs to be dealt with differently, through banking or secondary sanctions. Too many people are dying", he wrote.

The US president met briefly at the Vatican on Saturday with Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelensky.

At the same time, European Commission President Ursula von der Leyen promised Kiev that it could count on the European Union's support in achieving a just and lasting peace at the negotiating table. "Europe will always stand by Ukraine in its search for peace," she said in a statement on the X network, after speaking with Zelensky on the sidelines of Pope Francis' funeral.
