Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelensky met with his US counterpart Donald Trump in the Italian capital, where both are attending the funeral of Pope Francis, the Ukrainian leader's spokesman said, and the White House said the conversation was "very productive".
The meeting came at a critical moment for talks to end the conflict between Ukraine and Russia.
Trump, who has been pressing both sides to agree to a ceasefire, said on Friday that talks between his envoy and the Russian leadership had been productive and called for a high-level meeting between Kiev and Moscow to finalize the agreement.
Trump has previously warned both sides that his administration would abandon its efforts to achieve peace if the warring states do not agree to a deal soon.
The meeting in Rome marks the first face-to-face meeting between Trump and Zelensky since their Oval Office spat in February. After that meeting, the United States suspended intelligence cooperation with Ukraine, crucial to its efforts to repel Russian attacks, but it was later restored.
