US President Donald Trump plans to sign an executive order today that will direct the attorney general and the secretary of homeland security to identify cities and states that are not complying with federal immigration laws within a month, a White House official said.
Last week, a federal judge blocked the Trump administration’s attempt to withhold federal funds from more than a dozen so-called “sanctuary cities” that have refused to cooperate with Trump’s tough immigration policies.
“President Trump plans to sign an executive order on Monday that further intensifies the crackdown on Democratic-led states and cities that are not fully cooperating with federal immigration authorities,” a White House official said.
The order was first reported by the Wall Street Journal. According to Trump’s schedule, the executive orders are scheduled to be signed at 5 p.m. Eastern time.
During his first 100 days in office, Trump has moved quickly to revoke the legal status of hundreds of thousands of people, increasing the number of people who can be deported, seeking to push the number of deportations to historic levels.
The Republican president has sought to end humanitarian legal entry programs initiated by his Democratic predecessor, and has revoked visas for thousands of students who participated in protests or had minor offenses, including traffic violations.
The American public is divided on Trump’s approach to immigration, but according to a Reuters/Ipsos poll conducted in mid-April, he had 45% approval on the issue, better than on other key issues.
