Trump suggests meeting with Putin, Zelensky after Alaska talks

AUTHOR:M.J. GDNUS

US President Donald Trump suggested last night that he might try to arrange a direct meeting with both Russian President Vladimir Putin and Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelensky after their summit in Alaska.

The idea, floated in informal comments to reporters, would be the first attempt at a trilateral meeting since the war began.

Trump described the Alaska session as a “getting to know each other” with Putin, but his comments reflect a balancing act: warning Moscow of “serious consequences” if the war continues, while portraying himself as a negotiator who can bring leaders together.

The Associated Press has noted that Trump’s approach to Putin has oscillated between friendliness and frustration. Analysts say this oscillation is likely to shape the Alaska talks — a mix of solicitation and threats.

For Kiev, the risk is that the trilateral talks could force premature concessions; for Washington, the potential benefit is creating space for de-escalation.

European diplomats have reacted cautiously, with one official saying that the idea of a trilateral dialogue is “worth considering, but only if it respects Ukraine’s sovereignty and avoids shortcuts.”

For now, Trump’s suggestion adds another layer of uncertainty to a summit already seen as one of the most significant in recent years.
